2009 Formula 1 World Champion Jenson Button will make his first ever NASCAR Cup series start at the Circuit of the Americas on March 26th, running in the #15 Ford Mustang for Rick Ware Racing.
Button was previously announced as one of the drivers for NASCAR’s Garage 56 program at Le Mans, alongside 24hr Le Mans and Daytona winner Mike Rockenfeller and seven-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson.
The Brit will be joining up with old F1 rival Kimi Räikkönen to make it the first time in NASCAR history that two Formula 1 champions have participated in the same event.
Also joining the two former F1 World Champions at COTA is two-time IMSA Champion and Rolex 24 winner Jordan Taylor, who is subbing in for Chase Elliott after his snowboarding injury in Colorado.
The RWR #15 has been more competitive than the teams other typical entries in the last couple of years, with drivers like Joey Hand, Riley Herbst, and David Ragan wheeling the car to some solid runs. In particular, the program ran towards the front of the field on road courses with Hand behind the wheel last season, but could never put a full race together with a best finish of only 20th – Button will look to fix that problem.
