18 year old Sammy Smith scores his first Xfinity series victory after dominating the final stage at Phoenix.
The main stories going into this race were Kyle Busch starting at the back due to a mechanical problem and Parker Kligerman’s accident in qualifying which forced him into a backup car.
Cole Custer’s #00 lined up on the pole with Justin Allgaier in the #7 on his outside. Once the green flag flew Custer jumped out front and led until the first caution on lap 30 when rookie Leland Honeyman Jr’s rear bumper came off his #45 after wall contact.
The green flag flew again on lap 36 with the #00 and the #7 on the front row. Custer led the first lap after the restart until Allgaier took the lead from him before the second caution of the day when Josh Berry in the #8 spun after contact from the #16.
We returned to green with 2 laps to go in the stage with the #7 and the #00 out front. Allgaier jumped out front and scored the win in the first stage.
Stage One Results:
The start of stage 2 saw a whole new cast of characters as several cars pit before the end of the stage. Nemechek in the #20 and Mayer in the #1. Before the end of the first lap of the stage, the #25 of Moffit spun in turn 3 and caused another caution.
Green flag action returned on lap 63 with the #20 in the top spot until another caution for the #24 of Connor Mosack spinning in turn 2.
Nemechek led after the lap 75 restart until a restart penalty forced him into the pits and the #21 of Austin Hill assumed the lead.
The 6th caution of the day flew on lap 84 after an incident between the JRM teammates of Josh Berry and Sam Mayer that resulted in Berry spinning around.
The green flag flew with 2 to go in the stage with Allgaier and the #78 of Alfredo out front. Allgaier jumped to the lead and won the second stage of the day.
Stage Two Results
The final stage commenced on lap 100 with Austin Hill and Daniel Hemric at the head of the field until rookie Sammy Smith made his first appearance up front on lap 103.
With 62 to go, the #08 of Gaulding blew a right front and hit the turn 1 wall.
52 to go saw the green flag with Busch in the #10 taking the lead until another caution flew when the #2 spun with a flat left rear tire. The #18 of Smith was scored as the leader.
44 to go the #18 beat Busch on the restart until 30 to go when the #78 spun on the front stretch.
Smith lined up with Nemechek at 24 to go until a crash between the #7 and #26 caused the final caution flag of the day.
15 to go saw the final restart and Smith managed to best Kyle Busch and JGR teammate Ryan Truex for his first career win in the Xfinity series. Ryan Truex matched his best career finish with 2nd.
Chandler Smith and Kyle Busch almost came together on the last lap which dropped Busch down to 9th.
