Aptly named Carson ‘Hurricane’ Hocevar won his first NASCAR Cup Series race this last weekend at Talladega, celebrating in a way that’s uniquely his own.
The image of Hocevar driving the car half-way out the window down the tri-oval to the cheers of the NASCAR faithful before planting the car in the wall for an encore burnout is undoubtedly going to become iconic in the history of one of NASCAR’s most storied tracks.
Hocevar also seems to have won over the usually no-nonsense NASCAR authorities with his celebratory antics, as newly assigned CEO Steve O’Donnell said on a podcast that it was “the coolest celebration I’ve ever seen”.
The headline-making driving style of the Spire Motorsports driver began in his early days as a Truck Series rookie, where his ‘win or else’ mentality led to clashes with all sorts of other drivers, resulting in his first win at Texas amid a last lap wreck.
That single win opened the floodgates for Hocevar, as the Michigander would pilot his truck to three more wins that season, culminating in a Championship Four appearance.
If Hocevar wasn’t a known-name before this race, he certainly was after.
In a battle with Corey Heim, the title favourite, Hocevar spun the Toyota driver out of contention for the title, Heim would get payback on Hocevar later that race.
NASCAR fans and drivers alike slammed Hocevar after the race, including current points leader Tyler Reddick who said on Twitter/X: “This dumbass will never learn”.
But whether it was good or not, Hocevar has made and continues to make headlines.
For NASCAR fans, a rough-driving, fast-paced racer with a long-trail of sheet metal behind him sounds like an almost copy paste of icon Dale Earnhardt and this hasn’t been lost on NASCAR either. NASCAR’s official Instagram account made a post likening Hocevar to the late-great champion, labelling him the ‘Intimidente’, a portmanteau of Earnhardt’s iconic ‘Intimidator’ nickname and his sponsor Chilli’s slogan ‘Ride the Dente’.
It’s clear Hocevar’s antics have struck a chord with NASCAR in the best possible way, as the association are clearly trying to market him as a driver for both newer fans who love his viral celebrations and older former Earnhardt fans who fell out of the sport.
The hurricane looks to be ready to make landfall, but will Carson win more races?
Absolutely he can. In his truck series career, Hocevar won in his third year and made a run at the title. And, in his third year in the Cup Series, he’s already got his first win and has consistently been in position to win more throughout the year.
Hocevar’s Spire Motorsports No. 77 currently sits eighth in points after 10 races, with a lowest position of 15th place, meaning he has not once been outside of qualification for the re-inaugural NASCAR Chase this year.
Finally over the hump of getting his first victory, the doors could open for the Michigan born driver to make his first run in the NASCAR postseason this year and, while a championship in his third season may be a tad ambitious, place highly among some of the best drivers that the world has to offer.
Carson Hocevar’s first race with a checkered flag on the door will be at Texas Motor Speedway, a track that saw his first ever pole position in the 2025 running of the race and an enticing place for the Spire unit to show that they can win just as well outside of superspeedway racing.
Green flag will drop at 2:30PM ET on Sunday 3rd May, where the whole NASCAR field will officially be on Hurricane watch.
